Examples
Writing amounts in words on cheques and invoices
Banks and tax authorities in India expect the amount in words to match the amount in figures exactly. Use the rupees result and check these points before you sign.
- The text ends with "Only", so nothing can be added after the amount.
- Paise are written after "and", for example "Rupees Five Hundred and Fifty Paise Only".
- A whole-rupee amount has no paise part, for example "Rupees Two Thousand Only".
- Always compare the figures and the words once more. If they differ, the bank may return the cheque.
Good to know
- Hindi words are not just a translation. Every number from 0 to 99 has its own Hindi word, such as सैंतालीस for 47 and निन्यानवे for 99. This tool uses the correct word for each one.
- Decimals are read digit by digit. In the plain word results 0.45 becomes "zero point four five". In the rupees results it becomes "forty five paise".
- More than two decimals are rounded. 10.456 is shown as 10.46 and the page tells you that it was rounded.
- Limit. The tool handles numbers up to 9 digits before the decimal point. For a bigger number, convert it in parts.
